Surprise! The loss of Mason hurts the Flyers, Emery stinks

So this should come as a surprise to absolutely nobody, but I figured it was worth visually representing; the Rangers chances in game 1 greatly improve with Ray Emery in goal. Steve Mason, who was injured over the weekend, will not start game 1 of the series versus the Flyers. His availability for game 2 and the rest of the series is unclear.

Other than beating the crap out of Braden Holtby in November, Flyers fans have had little to cheer about with Emery in goal. He’s rocking a 90.3% Sv% and a 91.8% Sv% during 5 on 5 situations. He stinks.

Mason, despite his critics, has actually played pretty damn well of late before going down with what is in all likelihood a concussion. The drop off between Mason and Emery is pretty significant when comparing their recent performances.

Yet again, the stats favor the Rangers in this series against the Flyers, but for whatever reason the uncertainty of the playoffs looms large as the series kicks off tomorrow.

This isn’t disrespect. It’s a fact. Sure, Emery may play very well. In fact, he’s likely to play well. But from a pre-game look, this should be a huge advantage for the Rangers.
