The Rangers found “their” replacement for Anton Stralman by signing Dan Boyle to a two year, $9 million deal ($4.5M AAV). It looks as though Boyle was the Rangers man all along. If you read this blog, which you clearly must, you will know that I hate this signing. I don’t think Boyle is particularly great on the power play anymore and he really isn’t capable of playing Stralman’s minutes at even strength.
Boyle needs sheltered minutes and power play time, which is not worth $4.5M a year. Especially since Tom Gilbert, who was Dave’s first choice, signed for nearly half that. Mark Fayne and Christian Ehrhoff also signed very reasonable deals elsewhere. Sather managed to target the most expensive and oldest available player who isn’t great at anything in particular anymore.
