Kevin Hayes will hit the free agent market at midnight tonight. Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman announced the team could not come to contract terms with Hayes after making a “generous” final offer. Hayes felt, in the end, it was his best interest to hit the open market. It has been rumored he wants to step into an NHL role right away and with the Blackhawks depth, that was unlikely to happen.
Hayes was a Hobey Baker finalist this past season playing for Boston College. He has a mixture of size, speed, and talent, something the scouts feel make him a top six winger within the next few years. The Rangers have been named among a small group of teams interested. Against them will be the Avalanche, Bruins, Panthers, Flames and Coyotes according to analysts around the league.
Keep an eye over the next 24 hours as Hayes may not have to wait very long to sign. He would be a nice fit with the Rangers and another player to add to the roster this upcoming season.
